Intrada (1997)
Part of the CD-booklet-text by Thomas Meyer: … In any case this is what the composer said about his Intrada for Orchestra (1998): «I actually should have composed something festive and joyous, but the music often goes its own way. Instead what came is music which is rather mysterious and atmospheric. I composed most of the piece in the old Hotel Val Sinestra in the middle of the woods in the Engadine, perhaps the music was influenced by the mood in this hotel which is supposed to be haunted. The dotted rhythms of a baroque overture and the ornamental lines of a ritual («Sacre du Printemps») give the music a sublime character - as one would expect from the «official» form of an Intrada. In that respect their is also something mysterious about the music». Müller was also influenced by a burial scene described in a book he read about Egypt. In this Intrada one could hear a funeral march which slowly comes closer and then continues onward. But this would be programmatic; one can not expect an exact musical conversion of this scene in the manner of Strauss. On the contrary: to remain fixed on this scene would entail possibly missing other moments brought into play by Fabian Müller … moments of elegy, doubt or humor. The gleaming fanfare in the trumpets and horns shortly before the end is answered by an expressive line in the bassoons. In this manner the dotted rhythm is carried through various situations.
