«Eiger» - a symphonic sketch (2004)
Eiger was inspired by the imposing mountain in the heart of Switzerland. It is notoriously difficult to climb and many have died in the attempt. Müller spent his childhood holidays at Grindelwald, the picturesque village at the foot of the mountain, marveling at the daunting monolith. In his symphonic sketch, he seeks metaphorically to ascend Eiger and to musically describe the moods that the mountain triggers in him just as Richard Strauss had done in his Alpine Symphony. The composer muses, “Was it Eiger itself, looking down on me for years as I write thousands of notes on paper? Or was it just a fascination to risk the attempt of bringing this lofty mountain into music and sound? Perhaps it was also reading about the history of the North Face… a world in which happiness and tragedy are so closely linked.” Eiger was commission by the Interlaken Music Festival in 2004 under the direction of star-conductor Andris Nelsons.
