«Three Taiwanese Songs» for Violoncello and Piano (2006)

The Three Taiwanese Songs for cello and piano are based on three traditional Folk melodies. The first song, entitled ‘Remembering’ comes from the south of Taiwan in the vicinity of the Kentin National Park, and sings of the four seasons. It begins with spring, with the blossoming of the buds. The course of the seasons stands as a metaphor to describe the wooing of a girl and a boy. With every new season, they come closer together, until they finally marry. The second song has the title ‘Love Song’. It is a song of the Amei, Taiwan’s indigenous people, which merges the lovesickness of a lonely individual with a description of the sea. ‘How beautiful are the moon and stars tonight’ is the title of the third song. This, too, comes from the Amei people. It describes in poetic fashion the reflection of the moonlight in the frozen dew. A night that will always remain in the memory.
